Neurolenses™ as a Treatment Option for BVD

NeuroLenses™ as a Treatment Option for BVD

Neurolenses

Binocular vision dysfunction, or BVD, may not be well-known, but it is very common. In fact, one clinical study found that as many as 56% of people may experience symptoms that are associated with BVD.

Take the Quick Test

One of the defining features of BVD is eye misalignment. This issue occurs when the eyes aren’t in perfect synchronization and this makes it much harder for you to see and remain visually focused. In order to achieve this, your brain and eyes have to work much harder than usual, placing pressure onto the trigeminal nerve. This nerve is the largest nerve in the brain and is responsible for the majority of sensations experienced in the neck and head.

As a result of the extra effort needed to see and focus, patients with BVD can experience a range of debilitating symptoms that have a profound effect on their day to day lives. These include but are not limited to:

  • Eye fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Shoulder pain

  • Neck pain

  • Light sensitivity

  • Dizziness and feeling off-balance

  • Dry Eyes

  • Eyes that are painful when you are trying to focus on a nearby object such as a computer or smartphone

  • Poor depth perception

  • Nausea

  • Clumsiness

  • Tilting your head to help you see more clearly

  • Blurred or double vision

Fortunately, there are treatments that can help to reduce and even eliminate the effects of binocular vision dysfunction. One of the most popular and effective is NeuroLenses™.

How Do We Measure Your Eyes for NeuroLenses™?

NeuroLenses™ are the first and only available prescription lenses that contain a specially contoured prism in order to bring the eyes into perfect alignment. This makes them an ideal treatment option for BVD.

Traditional lenses are designed to help correct refractive eye errors that cause problems such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). However, they are not designed to help address eye misalignment. The NeuroLens™ contoured prism takes your individual dynamic eye alignment into account and gradually increases the prism power from distance to near in order to bring the eyes into the ideal alignment. This is important since studies have found that around 90% of patients experience a larger visual misalignment when viewing nearby objects (such as a computer screen), than they do when looking at objects in the distance. One study found that 93% of patients will have an improvement in their symptoms, the majority of those patients having significant improvement. However, your micro-prism lenses are perfected sometimes over subsequent visits to our offices, and in the end, the average patient will tend to have an impressive 80% reduction in their symptoms by the end of their treatment.

NeuroLenses™ are extremely convenient as they can be placed into virtually any glasses frames. This enables patients to enjoy the flexibility of choosing the style of frames that suit them best, whilst still enjoying clear vision and without any of the unpleasant symptoms associated with BVD.
